How to remote access office computer/PC over the Internet?

Another computer can be accessed over the internet using Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Connection, all you need to do is put the static IP address of that computer into the remote access software.

But all ISP’s do not provide static IP addresses; either you purchase a static IP from your ISP or use the Dynamic IP address. Using Dynamic IP address makes it almost impossible to connect to the remote computer as the IP will be constantly changing.

If we can somehow make the dynamic IP; static, remote access will be possible. No-IP can help assigning a domain name to your Dynamic IP address. So when the IP address changes it will redirect it back to the domain name assigned to you.

Step1: Signup for a No-IP account

Step2: Login to the account and click on Add a host

Step3: Type in a host name, and select a free domain from the dropdown. For example digitalpsyche.no-ip.org

Step3: Click Create Host

Step4: Download the No-IP Dynamic Update Client (DUC) HERE

Step5: Install No-IP Dynamic Update Client (DUC) on the machine you want to access over the internet and configure it with the username and password of your No-IP account.
The client will run in the system tray. You can also configure it to run on startup.

Step6: Configure your computer to accept remote connections, Click Start > Control Panel > and then double-click the System icon. Go to remote Tab and check on Allow users to connect remotely to this computer checkbox, and click OK

Step7: Leave your computer running and connected to the Internet. It is now ready to accept remote connections.

Step8: If your computer is directly connected to the ISP or you don’t have a router then you can skip this step. But if you have a router then you will need to open a port 3389 to allow the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) .i.e. Port Forwarding. What is port forwarding? How to forward ports? To check if port 3389 is open on your router, visit canyouseeme and enter 3389 in the port area. If the check fails check your router settings and retry. If you have a firewall or anti-virus protection you need to configure it to allow port 3389 traffic.

Step9: If the everything mentioned above is setup correctly you should be able to access the computer over the internet. Simply open Remote Desktop Connection on your home computer Start > All Programs > Accessories > Communications > Remote Desktop Connection. Put in your No-IP host name, user name and password of the office computer (if any) and click connect. You should now be able to see the desktop of your office computer.
